Beginner’s Guide to Sex Toys: Types and Care

Choosing a first sex toy is easier when you focus on intended use, dimensions, controls, material information, and cleaning needs instead of marketing promises. No product can guarantee a particular sensation or result.

Start With Intended Use

Decide whether you want external stimulation, a stroker, vibrator, prostate massager, or shared toy. Check dimensions, insertable length where relevant, controls, power source, care instructions, and the body area for which it is designed.

Choose Manageable Size and Controls

Larger size and stronger settings are not automatically better. A simple control layout may be easier for a first toy. Start at a lower setting and increase only while comfortable. For powered products, confirm charging instructions and stated water protection before cleaning.

Check Material Information

Look for clearly stated material and product-specific care guidance. Silicone, TPE, glass, and metal differ in texture, rigidity, and maintenance. A vague “premium” label is not a substitute for useful specifications.

Match the Lubricant

Use a lubricant compatible with the toy and any condom or barrier. Water-based lubricant is a flexible starting point for many products, but the manufacturer's instructions take priority.

Clean and Store the Toy

Clean before and after use according to the instructions, then let the toy dry completely. Store it in a clean pouch or separate container. Stop using a product that becomes cracked, sticky, peeling, damaged, or difficult to clean.

Use Anal Toys Designed for the Purpose

Any insertable anal toy needs a wide flared base, substantial stopper, or reliable retrieval feature. Never substitute a product that was not designed for anal insertion.

Compare automatic male strokers, prostate massagers, or lubricants. See our material comparison guide for care details.
