Missionary Position: Comfort, Communication, and Support

Illustration of the missionary intimacy position and partner alignment

The missionary position can be simple to adjust for comfort and communication. It is not a fixed script: support, pace, and angle can be changed at any time.

Talk and Check In

Discuss boundaries, barriers, pace, and how either person can pause. Consent remains active throughout, and either person can stop without explanation.

Use Support and Small Adjustments

Pillows under the hips, knees, or back may improve comfort for some people. Keep weight supported rather than pressing on a partner’s chest, neck, or airway. Change angle or take a break if there is strain.

Lubricant and Toys

Use lubricant compatible with any barrier and toy involved. If including a toy, choose a product designed for the relevant body area, keep controls accessible, and clean it as directed.

When to Stop

Pause for pain, numbness, irritation, breathing difficulty, dizziness, or a change in consent. Choose a different activity rather than pushing through discomfort.

Browse body care and lubes for comfort essentials.
